This video is a 26
1/2-minute documentary set in the context of the Antigua Classic
Yacht Regatta in 1999. It centers around three days of racing and
focuses on different types of yachts, their owners, builders, and
designers. There are interviews with the owners and members of the
crew in which they express their passion for the aesthetic of wooden
yacht restoration and racing. A feel for the life of this global
subculture, which migrates in gypsy style from port to port, is
interlaced into the plot with party and island footage and life
along the docks. On Digital Mini DV videotape with a Sony 900 video
camera, racing footage is captured on board Magic Carpet, a 56-foot
yawl built by Sparkman and Stephens in 1959, and the 120-foot J
Boat, Shamrock V, as well as footage of all classes participating in
this magnificent sailing event. This regatta was of particular
importance because it was the
first time since the 1930s that the three restored J Boats,
Velsheda, Endeavour and Shamrock V had raced against one another.
This extraordinary small gem of vivid color and sound and its
original musical score captures the essence of what each sailor
yearns for.
